Shannon was the daughter of a farmer who feeds pigs old snacks to constipate them so that they are fatter than they should be. Shannon has an older brother named Shane who gets all of the attention because of a terrible incident: while burning trash, a full can of hairspray is thrown into the trash which explodes in his face. Shannon is angry because she feels neglected by her parents, and eventually in pursuit of attention she becomes a model. When becoming a model this is how she meets Brandy Alexander. Brandy Alexander, a pre-operative transsexual, has been shot, and asks Shannon to tell her life story. This causes Shannon to look back at how she first met Brandy. The police think that Shane's accident was abuse, but although they investigate the family, they find nothing and it becomes a cold case. Eventually, Shane gets a really bad sore throat. The parents assume that it is strep throat, but when the test results come back, it turns out he has gonorrhea the throat. I feel bad for Shane. :/ Well I also found some things online that might interest you.
1. A film based on the novel was planned to start filming in 2004. The filming was not done that year, and little has been said about the film since. Imdb.com has a link for Invisible Monsters saying it has gone into production as of 2006. It is said to be released in late 2008.
2. The band Panic at the Disco's song, Time to Dance, is based entirely on Invisible Monsters.

Last Book :] Invisible Monsters
The story is about a girl who I learned later is named Shannon McFarland. The novel opens on the wedding day of Ms. Evie Cottrell, where her house has caught fire and is burning to the ground. Everything in the beginning pages from pages 12-63 are rough and jumpy and I believe that Palahniuk intended all the serious of events to be messed up. It feels as if I miss something when the Narrator Shannon keeps jumping from one event to another, but it all makes sense once I reread the passage. There are also very early signs of perception to connect with my essential question. On page 39 Shannon's fiancé was horrified when he saw the pictures of her face after the car accident. He says " Oh God! Oh sweet, sweet Jesus! Christ!" This obviously does not make Shannon feel great about what she looks like because only outsiders can perceive and look at her physical appearance. The hospital had taken away all the mirrors so that she would not have the time to look at herself, thus creating no self- perception for her at this point in the book. The perception that was given to her by her fiancé is not a very inviting one because even though the accident has totally disfigured her face he should not be so blunt and make her feel bad he should be telling her things like "your beautiful no matter" etc. Also another great quote dealing with perception is on page 40 and Shannon jumps to a time when she was with Manus, her fiancé, sailing and she needed sunglasses because she forgot hers. She says, "What I dont know is that one of my sunglass lenses is darker than the other, almost opaque. I'm blind in one eye because of this lens, and I have no depth perception. This could mean one of two things. The first thing it could mean is the literal meaning that she really has no depth perception at this point. The other thing it could mean is that this depth perception or these sunglasses could be alluding to the perception that she does not see about herself or maybe even Manus.
