I know that I have no blogged in a long time so here is the excitement that I have read thus far:
1. Victor is the protagonist of the book and his mother is in a hospital.
2. He works for a traveling act making 6$ and hour and everyone he works with has a compulsive behavior like him only they are drugs.
3. P36-37 "The truth was . . . trying to determine their best profile." being sarcastic about image and self perception. (this is the only quote within 4 chapters to actually strike a bell about answering the essential question that I began with.)
These last few chapters have been a bit boring and I do in spite of them being a little dull, look forward to reading the rest of the book. :]

This is probably one of those books that seem boring near the begining but explodes with action later on. Especially after you mentioning the compulive behavior, I believe that the author is trying to built rising action for the story at this point. If it seems dull, don't feel in any way drawn away from the book because it will probably only increase your enjoyment once the action begins. I can't wait to hear about what happens next!
